Happy Summer!

Happy Last Day of School!  As we head into summer, I'll try to post some fun math activities that are travel friendly. Here is a link to a video description of a War card game using even and odd numbers. All you'll need is a deck of cards (you can buy them on Amazon by clicking the link to the right). App Review

Hello!

Summer is just around the corner and so are those long car rides! How about putting those ipads to use learning some math!

This post is the first in what I hope will be a series of app reviews to help you decide which Math apps are worth your child's time. All the apps I will review are free, but some may include the option to upgrade for a cost.

Be sure to check the settings on you child's ipad and set your preferences for in-app purchases.

The fist App up is...

Splash Math!

This App requires you to create an account. This is done simply with a parent email address. If you don't want emails from them, you could always create a gmail account and use it uniquely to register things like free Apps.

Practice in subjects like addition, subtraction, place value, telling time, geometry, data and graphs for Grades 1-5. The graphics in this game are cute, but somewhat geared towards younger children. The games have a 'daily limit' of how much you can play and then it requires a purchased upgrade.

The younger grades have the directions read to them, which is helpful. In general, this game offers very simple practice with age appropriate skills. For Kilmer Students, after practicing for a bit at grade level,  you may want to have them go a grade up for a little more challenge.

Splash Math will generate parents reports giving you time on task, scores, and performance by topic.

For this App my overall rating is a 3 out of 5 stars.

It's Ok, but the simplicity of the skills and the limited time play keep it from being 4 stars.

Hello All!

I've added another section on the right-hand side called Third Grade Challenges. If you are looking fun puzzles and problems that will push your child's mathematical thinking, you'll find some there. Also there is a section for multiplication games that you should check out, we can all use more practice with multiplication!

Looking for something to do on a rainy day?

Here are some fun games that will help you with your geometry skills...

Kindergarten- Fun with Shapes
Match shapes to puzzle pieces to complete the picture.

Grade 1- Robopacker
Pack robots in a suitcase to send them on their way!

Grade 2- Starship
Use what you know about geometry to answer questions and free the space guy and the princess.

Grade 3- Shape Surveyor
Practice your area and perimeter skills and uncover a hidden picture.

Grade 4- Learn About Angles (not the most original name)
Drag angle measures from the white box into a circle to squirt things with a hose. Maybe they should have called it Angle Squirt!

Grade 5- Bricker 2
This game works on spacial reasoning more than specific geometry, but it's super fun and a little addictive!

Nothing to do with math, but still fun...

This site has a bunch of free printables. There are paper dolls (some for boys too), games, and activities for the car. So fun!
